Ethiopian Airlines was established on December 21, 1945. As one of the pioneer African airlines, Ethiopian began operations, with DC-3/C-47 aircraft. It has now become one of Ethiopia’s major industries and an institution in Africa, operating a modern and environmental friendly fleet. It commands the lion’s share of the pan African network, including the only daily east-west flight across the continent. Ethiopian’s network spans to Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Middle East and Asia, connecting cities across the globe. The airline is currently implementing its 15-year strategic plan called "Vision 2025" with the goal of becoming the leading aviation group in Africa. Ethiopian is proud to be a Star Alliance Member since December 2011.
Tewolde GebreMariam has been the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines since January 2011. He began his career with Ethiopian in 1985 as Transportation Agent and has held a number of senior leadership positions in a number of divisions in the Airline including; Ethiopian Cargo, Area Offices and Marketing.
On July 1, 2006, he was appointed as Chief Operating Officer of Ethiopian to head all the operating divisions of the airline.
In July 2013, he became the first African Airline CEO to receive “The Airline Strategy Award for Regional Leadership”. The Award is given out annually by Airline Business Magazine, a publication of Flight Global, the world’s leading aviation media brand. The 2015 International Grand Prix special award in Milan has also graced him for his achievements in developing the Airline into the foremost aviation group in Africa.
He earned his B.A. Degree in Economics from the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Open University in the United Kingdom.
