TAP celebrates its 70th birthday!

FRANKFURT, March 17 - Our Portuguese member airline TAP Portugal celebrated its 70th birthday this weekend - which also marks its 10-year anniversary of joining Star Alliance.

In the run-up to the celebration the airline ran a competition to design the best commemorative cake. This accolade went to Sandra Ervalho (pictured), an architect from Póvoa de Varzim (Northern Portugal) who has cake and pastry-making as a hobby. Ervalho came to TAP HQ on Friday March 13 to offer the original cake to TAP CEP Fernando Pinto. .

Ervalho had emerged as the winner of a challenge launched by TAP on its Facebook page some weeks ago, inviting fans to create a celebration cake, both in terms of recipe and decoration, and send in their proposals. TAP received 135 proposals which can be seen at: http://passatempos.flytap.com/bolo-70anos/Participations.aspx.

Out of the 10 most popular with the public, TAP selected a short list of five and then the airlines' company Chef Vítor Sobral chose the winning cake. The cake was then produced by the TAP group catering company Cateringpor, who produced of over 15,000 individual small cakes, made with more than 2,000 kg of ingredients. These cakes were served to all TAP passengers or around 150 flights that departed LIS and OPO on TAP's anniversary day, March 14.
