Earning miles or points with Star Alliance

Customers flying on the Star Alliance network can earn miles or points whenever they fly with any member airline on a qualifying flight. Star Alliance does not offer a single central frequent flyer programme, however membership in any one of the 21 frequent flyer programmes (FFPs) operated by the member airlines allows travellers to earn miles right across the network.

The actual miles or points vary by airline and customers need to contact their own frequent flyer programme to determine what they will earn. Miles or points earned anywhere on the network also count towards the customer's Silver or Gold status.

How to earn miles or points

Frequent flyers need to provide their frequent flyer number when booking their ticket or checking in for their flight. If you are a check-in agent, and you notice that there is no FFP number in the booking, please be sure to ask the customer whether he or she is a member in a frequent flyer programme. This saves problems later as it allows the miles or points to be sent to the account automatically.

If, for whatever reason, there is a problem with the automatic mileage credit process, customers need to contact their home frequent flyer programme to request a retroactive credit (even if they flew on another Star Alliance carrier). Sometimes this claim can be made online. In some cases, they need to send all relevant ticket information and boarding passes directly to their frequent flyer programme.
