Alitalia stresses importance of Airberlin partnership
Alitalia is tapping its relationship with Etihad equity partner Airberlin to strengthen its historically weak northern network. “The competition has taken too much business in northern Italy and Germany,” Etihad Aviation Group president and CE James Hogan said. The air travel market between Italy and German is huge, triggering Alitalia to make major network changes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. As part of this strategy, Alitalia has strengthened ties with Airberlin, boosting weekly frequencies 25% and expanding their codeshare to cover more than 1,400 flights per week on 91 routes. The two airlines are also working to find synergies to remove duplicated costs. Hogan said Airberlin is still working on restructuring, but he denied Alitalia and Airberlin could come together. <br/>
