Alitalia switches to Sabre IT system

Alitalia has completed a major IT upgrade that involved switching its reservations system to a new provider, the airline said Wednesday. From 8 pm local time Oct 14 and throughout Oct 15, the airline’s computerised booking system was out of action as it was switched from previous provider Arco to a new system from Sabre that controls reservations, check-in and critical airline operations. Prospective passengers were unable to book or change tickets on the airline’s website or through its call centre or travel agencies during the cutover period. Alitalia said it “significantly increased” staff numbers at its call centres over the period, in anticipation of an upsurge in passenger enquiries. The carrier said the change to a new system was part of its business recovery program and would help its financial performance. <br/>
