Garuda Indonesia to offer new routes within Papua

Garuda Indonesia has announced plans to open two new routes connecting the Papuan capital of Jayapura with two regencies in the same province, namely Yahukimo and Jayawijaya. The airline's GM in Jayapura, Wahyudi Kresna, said the new routes would be opened next year, serving flights to Nop Goliat Dekai Airport in Yahukimo and Wamena Airport in Jayawijaya. "We currently offer five flights from Biak to Nabire, Mimika and Jayapura per week. Customers have been asking us to add more flights, since our service is more affordable. Previously they had to rent an airplane that can cost Rp 2 million per person for a trip from Mimika to Nabire," said Wahyudi, as quoted by kompas.com on Monday. The new routes are to be served by ATR aircraft at low fares. Papua Transportation Agency head Djuli Mambaya said he expected the new service to encourage other airlines operating existing routes to lower their ticket prices, which have been deemed too high.<br/>
