United Airlines CE pressed by US senators to explain IT outage

Two US senators, Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal, dispatched a letter Monday to United Airlines CE Oscar Munoz seeking answers to questions about a computer outage the airline experienced late Sunday that resulted in the grounding of hundreds of United flights for a period of 2.5 hours. A United spokesman Monday morning attributed the problem to computer issues, but declined to be more specific. But Markey and Blumenthal want Munoz to get a lot more specific as they spearhead an effort to get airlines to update their IT infrastructure. The senators' effort took off last fall in the wake of two major IT breakdowns in quick succession — first at Southwest Airlines and then Delta Air Lines. <br/>
