Finnair halves Q1 loss to US$8.7m

Finnair has reported an E8m (US$8.7m) Q1 net loss, narrowed 46.9% from a E15.1m loss in the year-ago period. “Revenue grew in particular due to solid demand for Asian and domestic flights. The passenger load factor rose and ancillary revenue per passenger [up 9.4% at E12.99] also continued to increase. Our comparable operating result improved E6m from the previous year. Hence, our result has now been on an upward trend for 10 consecutive quarters,” CE Pekka Vauramo said. He added that mid-winter is a seasonally challenging quarter, but there are “several positive signs” that suggest demand for European travel has stabilised. Chinese and Korean bookings were also up. Third-party strike action in March, which triggered Finnair to cancel nearly 2 days’ of flights, cost the airline around E3m. <br/>
