New directives from the Department of Homeland Security require airlines that fly to the US to step up screening of passengers for trace amounts of explosives and, in some cases, impose more stringent security checks. The department laid out generally what the measures would do. But the additional details were disclosed in an airline industry memo. Aviation specialists and industry officials predicted that the new mandates would add to the challenges of airports and airlines, particularly smaller ones, during the busy summer travel season.
