For the second time in just over a week, media outlets are reporting people got sick on an American Airlines flight due to a strange odour. The latest incident comes out of Miami International, where several American Airlines crew members were sickened and asked to be taken to a hospital Monday due to something they smelled. Last week, a similar report of sickness due to an “foul odour” got international attention on a flight out of Charlotte to Raleigh. Media outlets incorrectly reported the July 16 incident was due to sick passenger, and that it forced the plane to be evacuated in Raleigh. American Airlines later clarified that the plane wasn’t evacuated, but a “medical call came in for someone affected by an odour” in the cabin. The odour was not explained, but the airline suggested it was due to a mechanical issue.
Malaysia Airlines is in talks with potential investors for new charter flights to carry Muslim travelers on the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a service planned to give a new lease of life to surplus A380 superjumbos at the unprofitable carrier. The carrier will apply for a license with Malaysian authorities this quarter and expects the service -- a separate venture from the main airline -- to be fully operational in about a year, CE Peter Bellew said Monday. Malaysia Airlines has held talks with parties in Asia and the Middle East involved in the tourism and aviation industries, he said. “We think there is a great sustainable business” which would be profitable and put the A380s to good use”, Bellew said. Planes used for the Hajj would accommodate as many as 700 people in a single class.
