Air Berlin further shrinks long-haul network

Air Berlin is to terminate all long-haul flights from the German capital and discontinue an Orlando service from Dusseldorf. Flights from Berlin Tegel to New York and Miami will end Sept 25, says the carrier. It had already, in late August, revealed its intention to stop its other long-haul flights from Berlin – to Abu Dhabi, Chicago Los Angeles and San Francisco –Oct 1. Flights from Dusseldorf to Orlando will cease Sept 25. Air Berlin says the network has been reduced to eliminate "loss-making routes" and "stabilise the operational situation" at Tegel. Air Berlin's fleet includes 17 Airbus A330 widebodies.
Cathay is in talks with pilots over compensation

Cathay Pacific Airways is in talks with its pilots over compensation as it seeks to cut costs after reporting its worst half-half loss in at least 2 decades. The airline has been in discussions with its pilots over the past few months as part of its goal to become more competitive, the company said Wednesday without elaborating. Its pilots are being urged to accept a freeze in their pay and changes to pension benefits to help the carrier cut HK$1b (US$128m) in costs. “We will continue to work in a collaborative manner with an aim to come to an agreeable solution,” Cathay said. “The goal is to make Cathay Pacific a more competitive organisation and to ensure the long-term sustainable future for the people of the airline.”
