Oneworld: Airberlin will leave alliance Oct. 28

Oneworld has confirmed that airberlin will no longer be part of the alliance from Oct. 28, when the bankrupt German carrier ceases operations. According to oneworld, airberlin affiliate NIKI—which joined oneworld alongside airberlin in March 2012—will no longer fly as part of oneworld at the same time. “Oneworld will continue to serve more than 1,000 airports in almost 160 countries worldwide,” the alliance said. “The withdrawal of airberlin and NIKI from the alliance will mean a dozen destinations—half of them regional cities in Austria and Germany and the rest southern European holiday spots—are leaving the alliance’s global network.”
Malaysia says no decision yet on new offers to search for missing MH370

Malaysia said Tuesday it has received proposals from three companies offering to continue the search for Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, which has been missing since 2014, but no decision has been made yet. MH370 vanished three years ago somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 people aboard. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said proposals were received from US-based seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity, Dutch firm Fugro and an unidentified Malaysian company. “We wont be deciding anything now on whether we are embarking on a new search or not,” Liow said. “We have to discuss with the companies. It will take some time as it’s some detailed discussions,” he said. Liow was commenting on media reports from Australia that said Malaysia could resume the search as early as this week. Liow said the proposals would eventually be presented to the other countries in the tripartite committee - China and Australia - before a decision was taken.
Air Berlin pilot's goodbye draws watchdog's scrutiny

A German aviation watchdog is scrutinising a fly-past by Air Berlin’s last long-haul flight to its hub in Duesseldorf, which German media said was the pilot’s unique way of saying “goodbye” to his passengers and the insolvent airline. The pilot of the flight from Miami on Monday pulled up the aircraft above the runway in Duesseldorf and made a low pass over the airport before coming around and landing. “That was a go-around manoeuvre. The Federal Aviation Office is examining the incident,” a spokesman for Air Berlin said on Tuesday. He declined to provide further details or confirm reports that said the manoeuvre was an intentional “lap of honour”. The Federal Aviation Office said while go-around manoeuvres were a normal procedure in air traffic, it had asked Air Berlin for details of Monday’s incident involving the A330 plane because it differed from ordinary go-arounds. “We are awaiting the results of an internal investigation at Air Berlin,” a spokesman for the watchdog said.
