United flight evacuated after blown tires in Denver

Passengers and crew on a United flight were bused to a concourse at Denver International Airport because of two blown tires. An airport spokeswoman says Flight 448 from Boston landed safely before the problem was discovered Monday evening. United said the tires on the Boeing 737 flattened after landing, and the airline apologized to its customers for the inconvenience. The plane stopped on the taxiway, and the 165 people on board were loaded onto buses. No injuries were reported.
United adds flights 204,000 seats to college football hot spots this fall

It’s no secret that college football is big business. That’s not lost on United Airlines, which says it’s using a mix of additional flights and bigger planes to boost capacity to college football hot spots such as State College, Pennsylvania; South Bend, Indiana; and Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina. Some major airports close to big universities – including Detroit, Oklahoma City and Columbus, Ohio – are also getting a season-long boost in capacity. In total, United is adding flights on 17 of its routes to 11 airports near big-time football campuses. Eight other routes to six different airports are getting bigger aircraft. The changes take effect in September and will remain on the schedule through November. United says the move will add 204,000 total seats to those markets during the period, an average daily increase of 2,200 seats per destination on a year-over-year basis. Air Canada, WestJet are latest to raise bag fees

Canadian carriers WestJet Airlines and Air Canada this month have hiked baggage fees on their cheapest tickets. WestJet increased the fee for a first checked bag to $30 Canadian dollars from $25 and a second checked bag to $50 Canadian dollars from $35. WestJet spokeswoman Lauren Stewart said the airline is not responding to JetBlue, noting that the carrier had previously said it was looking at offsetting costs and increasing bag fees. Still, the carrier did not have any notice on its website about increased fees on flights outside Canada until Tuesday, a day after JetBlue unveiled its higher fees. Air Canada's new fees apply to tickets purchased on or after Aug. 21 for travel Oct. 5 and beyond. The airline's baggage fees vary by route and type of ticket. On flights between Canada and the United States, the first checked bag will now be $31.50 to $34.50 Canadian dollars for basic and standard fares, up from $26.25 to $28.75. The second checked bag on those flights will be $52.50 to $57.50 Canadian dollars, up from $36.75 to $40.25
