Turkish Airlines: Flying the flag for Erdogan

Turkish Airlines has grown aggressively during Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s watch, serving as a soft power tool in his efforts to recast the country’s place in the world. Its rapid international expansion makes it one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, jostling with carriers in the Gulf to steal business away from traditional European and US rivals. But the carrier has been buffeted by the regional and domestic turmoil that has hit Erdogan’s Turkey in recent years. Now, it is preparing to move into a new US$12b hub which will eventually be able to handle up to 200m passengers a year. Some analysts, however, are asking whether the carrier can push on into a new phase of expansion — or whether it has reached its limits. <br/>
