Schiphol hit by delays, cancellations as KLM ground crews strike

More than 40 flights were delayed and a dozen canceled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Wednesday, as KLM ground crews went on strike. A spokesman for KLM, a subsidiary of Air France-KLM, said the airline had canceled 6 flights as a result of the strike. Other delays and cancellations were due to poor weather and repairs, making landing strips unavailable. A spokeswoman for Schiphol said that the cancellations were among KLM and allied “Skypartners” airlines. The airport’s website showed most cancellations were for outgoing KLM flights. Most incoming flights of all airlines were delayed by about an hour, with disruptions set to continue until mid-afternoon. “We have tried to allow as many flights as possible to go ahead, despite the strike, for passengers willing to travel with hand baggage only,” a KLM spokesman said. The strike, the second of its kind this week, was scheduled to last through the morning rush hour, from 0530 until 0800 GMT.
Kenya Airways seeking more sway in alliance with Air France-KLM

Kenya Airways is looking to renegotiate a 24-year long partnership with Air France-KLM to gain more control over their cost and revenue-sharing deal and the ability to make agreements with other airlines. The partly state-owned company has removed all staff that came from the European airline, including Chief Operations Officer Jan de Vegt, and replaced them with local employees, Chief Executive Officer Sebastian Mikosz said in an emailed response to questions. The existing arrangement allowed the carriers to pool resources and gain easier access to their respective territories through joint ticket sales. “We are working towards revamping our joint-venture agreement between KQ and Air France-KLM, adapting and simplifying the scope and activities around it,” Mikosz said. Air France-KLM has agreed to help design “a new joint-venture model to be implemented by 2020,” a spokeswoman for the Paris-based airline said. The original deal only included KLM, with Air France joining last year. Easing ties with the French-Dutch group will allow KQ -- as the airline is known -- to seek additional partnerships with carriers such as Lufthansa and the BA arm of IAG, according to an internal document. The renegotiation between Kenya Airways and Air France-KLM comes as the Kenyan government considers whether to fully nationalize the airline after losses tripled in H1. Lawmakers have already rejected the carrier’s bid to help run the nation’s biggest airport, a move management said would help restore profitability. The state became Kenya Airways’s biggest shareholder following a bailout in 2017, which cut Air-France-KLM’s stake to 7.8%.
China Airlines firms orders for another three 777Fs

China Airlines has firmed orders with Boeing for three additional 777 Freighters, finalising a previously announced agreement between Boeing and the Taiwanese carrier. Boeing announced at the Paris air show in June that China Airlines intended to acquire six of the widebody freighters. The airline firmed orders for three of those 777Fs in July and has now closed a deal to purchase the remaining three. The six freighters have a combined list price of $2.1b, says Boeing. China Airlines will use the 777Fs to begin cargo flights from Taipei to North America, according to Boeing. The aircraft have more than 6,000nm of range, cargo payload of 102t and capacity to carry 27 standard-size cargo pallets. The purchase will see China Airlines supplement its 10 passenger-configured 777-300ERs with the freighter variant. The carrier also operates 18 747-400Fs.
