Joyce promises to 'focus on cost' in Qantas profit drive
Qantas says fresh cost-cutting, new aircraft and revenue-raising initiatives such as giving individual customers "personalised" airfare offers will deliver it ambitious earnings improvements in its core airline business over the next 5 years. The plan that Qantas laid hopes to improve the profit margin in its domestic operation from 12% to 18%, and raise Jetstar's from 9% to 22% by 2024. Qantas last month signalled slowing global and domestic economies were weighing on passenger numbers, and both it and Virgin Australia had been keeping a tight rein on capacity amid slowing demand. “In the year ahead there will be a lot more focus on cost and in the next 5 years we think there is a path to achieve significant improvement in margins,” Qantas CE Alan Joyce said. <br/>
