Air China refuelling in North Korea raises sanctions suspicions

Photographs showing Chinese aircraft refuelling in Pyongyang have raised suspicions over where North Korea is sourcing its fuel and whether China is defying international sanctions. Images published Monday by NK Pro, a North Korea-focused information service, revealed that Air China aircraft flying between Beijing and Pyongyang frequently refuelled in the North Korean capital. The series of pictures, captured between Sept 2016 and May 2019 show Air China’s Boeing 737s connecting to fuel trucks run by Air Koryo, North Korea’s flagship airline, which has close ties to the country’s military. Air China confirmed the refuelling process but declined to comment on the source of the fuel. International sanctions prohibit the sale of aviation fuel to Kim Jong Un’s regime but some analysts suspect China is selling it to North Korea. <br/>
