Global airlines produce 6.7m tons of waste each year
According to the IATA, around 1.37 kilograms of waste was produced by each passenger in 2018 alone for an estimated total of 6.7m tons. The amount was almost a 29% jump from 5.2m tons in 2016, with waste from flights becoming a major environmental hazard. Inflight meals account for over 33% of the waste produced during a flight, followed by paper products at 28% and plastic at 12%. IATA says the amount of waste will double in the next decade with the proliferation of budget airlines along with the rise of the tourism industry. Roughly 4.3b passengers flew in 2018 and the number continues to grow each year, according to IATA, which emphasized the need for cooperation between nations in swapping out disposables for reusable items. <br/>
