Air cargo demand helps Korean to Q3 operating profit

Air cargo demand helped Korean Air eke out an operating profit of W7.6b ($6.5m) in Q3 — its second consecutive profitable quarter since the coronavirus struck — but its overall revenue was down more than half from a year earlier. The W7.6b operating result for the three months ended 30 September is 94% below the third quarter of 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic. Revenue for the quarter fell 53% to W1.55t, while expenses fell 51% to W1.54t. RPK’s fell 91% from a year earlier, but FTKs rose 59%. The airline said that cargo demand has remained strong, and it has been able to increase cargo capacity through the use of passenger aircraft for cargo services. Korean’s net loss, however, widened to W386b from W118b a year earlier. “The aviation industry continues to suffer from the pandemic, and the outlook is still bad,” says CE Walter Cho. “We were able to achieve a second profitable quarter due to our strong cargo operations and the sacrifices of our employees.” The carrier adds that its passenger business continues to suffer from the collapse in international travel owing to the pandemic, although there was a slight up-tick in services to the Americas, Europe, and East Asia as compared with the second quarter. It attributed this to more chartered flights for business travelers and the transport of Korean residents, as well as the easing of travel restrictions in some countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia. The carrier also enjoyed domestic demand during summer vacation season. Its outlook for Q4 is bleak, with passenger demand continuing to fall. This, however, will be partially offset by cargo demand, which is entering peak season.<br/>

Bombardier falls as UK investigates ‘suspected bribery’

Bombardier fell after the UK’s Serious Fraud Office confirmed that it was investigating the company over “suspected bribery and corruption.” The probe involves the company’s dealings with Garuda Indonesia, the SFO said Thursday. The airline ordered Bombardier CRJ regional jets, with the first delivery in 2012. “As this is a live investigation, the SFO can provide no further comment,” the SFO said. Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency last year detained Garuda’s former head as part of a probe into procurement of aircraft and engines. The SFO inquiry adds a new complication for CEO Eric Martel’s attempt to remake Bombardier as a builder of private jets after the company sold its CRJ business to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, unloaded a commercial-jet program to Airbus and agreed to merge its rail unit with Alstom. Before trading opened, the Montreal-based company reported a wider-than-expected loss for Q3 and said it had begun an internal review by outside counsel into its transactions with Garuda. Bombardier said the review was launched shortly after an Indonesian court convicted Garuda’s former head and his associate of corruption and money laundering in May. The charges were in connection with five procurement processes involving different manufacturers, including the 2011-2012 acquisition and lease of Bombardier CRJ1000 aircraft by Garuda, Bombardier said. No charges were laid against Bombardier or any of its directors, officers or employees. The company said it understands that the SFO’s investigation involves the same transactions. <br/>
