Alaska Airlines said on Friday its operations have returned to normal across its network, after a massive winter storm in the United States crippled movement through the holiday week. "We continue to help our guests with travel arrangements for flights that were canceled over the past week and a half, including booking them on other airlines to get them to their destinations," the company said. The Seattle-Washington based carrier also lowered its fares in select cities for passengers looking to book new flights in the wake of weather disruptions.
The cabin crew union of Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways on Friday issued an ultimatum to management and threatened that if no serious talks were set up, it would not rule out taking industrial action over Lunar New Year. The 3,000-strong Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union said it had only met management three times this year, but bosses had not addressed their concerns about adequate rest and manpower issues. “The FAU has raised serious concerns about cabin crew exhaustion and passenger well-being, but since Cathay management has refused to act, we have no choice but to resort to industrial action,” union vice-chairwoman Grace Siu Wing-yan said. “We want to avoid restrictions over Lunar New year. It is entirely avoidable if Cathay agrees to address our reasonable and rational concerns.” The union has warned staff cuts could impact customer safety as crew “may be unable to adequately respond to inflight emergencies”. Last week the union said members at an emergency meeting earlier this month had unanimously agreed to support a decision to implement a “work-to-rule” industrial action, but did not give a time frame of when it would begin.
Cathay Pacific is pausing flights to Fukuoka and Nagoya Chubu and reducing services to other Japanese cities as it responds to new Covid-19-related travel restrictions imposed by Japanese authorities. As China readies to reopen its borders and with a surge in Covid-19 infections there, multiple jurisdictions, including Japan, have begun to reimpose restrictions on travellers and airlines coming from the region. Earlier this week, Japan said it would only allow flights from Hong Kong and Macau to land at four airports. This has since increased to seven airports. Travellers flying in from the Chinese mainland, whether directly or via transit ports, will be required to take Covid-19 tests on arrival in Japan from December 30 and airlines flying to and from China have been to not to increase their flights into Japan. "As airlines are not allowed to increase flights beyond the number that they operated in the week of December 23-29, Cathay Pacific will only be able to operate 65 flights per week in total to (its Japanese) destinations. That represents a 20% reduction to our planned Japan schedule in January 2023," reads a Cathay Pacific statement. From December 30 until further notice, Cathay Pacific will pause all flights from Hong Kong to Nagoya and Fukuoka and reduce flights to Sapporo Chitose from seven times a week to five. Certain flights on unspecified dates on CX500 services to Tokyo Narita and CX502 services to Osaka Kansai will also be cancelled.
