Chinese airlines take 'all you can fly' promotions international

China Southern Airlines rolled out an "all you can fly" international pass Tuesday for its frequent flyers, expanding an unlimited domestic flights program launched three years ago. The carrier joined two other cash-strapped Chinese airlines in offering passengers access to unlimited flights at a discount to encourage air travel. Right now there are too many domestic flights for the level of demand and airlines urgently need to soak up excess capacity by filling more international flights, industry analysts said. However, the fourth quarter is usually a slow season for international travel. The "all you can fly" deals are expected to stimulate outbound tourism and fill up airplanes during the slow season, industry analysts said. Initially, the China Southern Airlines "all you can fly" international pass applies only to flights to Asian countries and targets frequent flyers. The domestic pass has been available to all passengers, the company said. Last month, budget carrier Spring Airlines introduced an "all you can fly" pass, giving passengers access to unlimited flights from October to the end of March 2024 for 3,399 yuan ($465). Shandong Airlines launched a similar product earlier this month. Southern Airlines has yet to post the price for its international pass. Analysts said they expect the pricing and terms to be similar to those of Spring Airlines. During the pandemic, dozens of Chinese airlines introduced unlimited domestic flight packages starting in the summer of 2020, as COVID-related restrictions prevented Chinese travelers from heading abroad. Meanwhile, Chinese airlines racked up huge losses. The country's airline companies incurred a combined loss of 216b yuan in 2022, exceeding red ink in the previous two years combined, according to figures provided by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).<br/>
