Tokyo flights to Miami, 'capital of the Americas,' could start in 2025

Miami-Dade county Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told Nikkei on Wednesday that she was "very hopeful" for Japan Airlines to start direct flights between Tokyo and Miami as early as 2025. Miami International Airport is a hub for American Airlines and serves many flights to major Central and South American airports. Cava said the county is in talks with Japan Airlines, but she acknowledged it may take time before an announcement can be made. "They are waiting for their earnings statements, and also they have some airplanes on order," she said. The Japanese government has declared 2024 the "US-Japan Tourism Year." Cava said it would be "even better" if the launch were pushed forward to next year. Miami-Dade county, home to 2.7m people on the Atlantic coast, is the largest administrative division in the US state of Florida. It spans multiple cities, including Miami and Miami Beach, and has a heavily Hispanic population. Miami was ranked the best city in the US for foreign business in the 2022 Investing in America list by the Financial Times and Nikkei. It fell to sixth place this year "because of the cost of living," Cava said, citing an influx of people from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley. Still, "Miami is paradise," Cava said. The mayor said the area has created 20,000 new jobs in two years and is the "capital of the Americas." The county offers the second-busiest US airport for international service and is the "cruise capital of the world," she said. Its diversity is another strength. "Over half of the residents of Miami-Dade county were born in a foreign country," Cava said. Miami-Dade serves as "the doorway to the Caribbean, Central and Latin America," she said, "so that is a great [investment] opportunity for Japanese companies as well." Cava is particularly interested in attracting climate-related investments from Japanese companies. Miami is frequently hit by hurricanes, and corrosion contributed to the 2021 collapse of a condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside.<br/>
