JAL sees surge in Chinese visitors to Japan on October holiday break

Japan Airlines bookings from China during the country's weeklong National Day holiday have recovered to the highest volume since the start of the pandemic. For the weeklong break to celebrate China's National Day, which began Tuesday, bookings on JAL's Chinese routes to Japan jumped 23% from a year earlier to roughly 15,800 seats, according to the carrier. Reservations have risen to more than 70% of the volume seen during the same period in 2019. The return of Chinese visitors to Japan can be seen in stores. Chinese visitors to Japan have been slow to bounce back due to the weak economy on the mainland and Beijing's protests over the release of treated wastewater from the disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Arrivals to Japan by all foreign nationals in October 2023 surpassed the number recorded during the same month in 2019, before the pandemic, according to Japan National Tourism Organization. But Chinese visitors had wallowed at less than 40%. This year, the return of Chinese travelers started to gain momentum. In July, Chinese guests at the Prince Hotel chain recovered to approximately 90% of the level in the same month in 2018, according to operator Seibu Prince Hotels Worldwide. Revenue has surpassed the July 2018 level by 40%.<br/>
